The following are verbatim excerpts from video commentaries, sent to us by our correspondents in St Petersburg. They are examples of the appalling treatment of, and crimes committed against, animals in Russia:

"In March the unknown sadists used this dog for boxing. His feet were tied to the branch of the tree, he was hanging with his head first. All his body was covered with bruisses. He was dying. Animal rights activists found him by chance and brought him to a clinic of Yuri Mikityuk. The dag was saved. Our Militia (Russian police) are not looking for the sadists. The Article 245 of the Russian Penal Code, Cruely Towards Animals, exists on paper only."
"In March Spetstrans came to kill this puppy and his family that were living in the basement of the house 14/4 Bulvar Razvedchika two times. Twice the people who took care of them managed to save them. At last they found owners for all the puppies. It was very difficult to do. In St. Petersburg, there is no pound to adopt such puppies."
"On the 15th of June 2006, Alexandra Gudimenko, who takes care of a lot of animals came to see two of them. The dogs that were watching over the territory of a service center at Babushkina Street. One of the dogs has got nine puppies. This dog was wounded by a Spetstrans staffer in Alexandra's sight. When the butcher was aiming at the dog Alexandra tried to protect her. She took the dog to the nearest clinic. The diagnosis was dithylinum poisoning. This dog was suffering bitterly. Fortunately, she was saved."
